Frustrating Super Formula Autopolis for Ticktum

Qualifying: 16th – Grid: 16th – Race: DNF

Dan Ticktum was fastest in FP1 on Friday but a confused weekend left the Red Bull Junior pointless at a weather affected Autopolis in the second round of the Super Formula series.

“I have to thank the team for putting in a lot of hard working coming into the weekend. From the numbers and my feedback after Suzuka they improved the car a lot and we saw that on Friday when we were quickest in FP1,” stated the 19-year-old Briton.

“After that it became a weekend to forget unfortunately. The weather really messed things up. Qualifying on Saturday was cancelled because of the weather and we had Qualifying session this morning where there were so many red flags that only twelve drivers got inside 107% because eight of us only got a single run. I would go out, have two fastest sectors then have to abort because of a red or yellow flag. That kept happening.”

“It was the same for everyone of course but it’s a great shame that they didn’t extend the session so that everyone could have a decent couple of laps. It made it a bit of a nonsense really. Of course we were all allowed to start but I was back in the grid.”

“Then in the race I made a small mistake in turn 3, touched the grass which was wet and that spun me around. As I went to get going again and spin around into the right direction another car came and I had to abort the spin and stalled the car. That was the end of my race,” explained the Mugen driver.

“A shame, as I said the team had done a great job and at least we can take those improvements to Sugo in a few weeks. I went well there last year so I’m looking forward to it.”
