It was a great home race weekend for Dan Ticktum, scoring his first podium and winning best Rookie for Arden Renault during the second round of the Formula Renault Eurocup season at Silverstone.
Dan showed his promising speed early in the weekend during the two wet testing sessions on Friday, regularly inside the top 10 on the unfamiliar Grand Prix track layout. The first Qualifying round in Silverstone on Saturday morning didn’t go quite as planned and he finished P14 overall. Following this disappointing result, Dan was ready to fight his way back up through the field. However, an early crash at the back of the field led to a long safety car period, preventing him from charging towards the front. Once the race had resumed, Dan was able to fight his way to P10, where he finished the race.
In Qualifying 2, the British driver was ready to demonstrate his full performance. Setting consistently very quick lap times at the sharp end of the grid, Dan eventually topped the timing sheets – only losing out on pole in the last seconds as he took the chequered flag early on a track that was constantly improving – he qualified an impressive P2 overall.
Dan had a great start in Race 2, taking the lead immediately. However, after being forced wide at turn 7 Dan had to drive a defensive race rather than trying to challenge for the win. He fought an impressive battle, keeping first Max Defourny and then Max Fewtrell at bay to take P3, behind Robert Shwartzman and Will Palmer, and the Rookie victory.
Dan Ticktum: “That was a really good day, it feels great to be on the podium in only my second race weekend in this series and with a new team. I did get to the front early on in Race 2 and I could have been a bit more aggressive defending that but I wanted to finish, wanted to get a good race in the bank.
“We really made progress with the car this weekend and I can’t wait to continue this momentum into Pau and Monaco, two street circuits that I’m really looking forward to driving, I feel that they could really suit my style.”
The next round of the Formula Renault Eurocup will take place in Pau on the 19 – 21 May.
